Today is the 250th Anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns. Our National Bard was born in Alloway in Ayrshire Scotland all those years ago. It is a special day in Scotland and many families will have a traditional meal tonight. A Burns Supper as it is called can be a big occasion here, many Burns Societies in Scotland have big Suppers in Hotels and Halls where they will pipe in the Haggis and have readings of Burns works and songs. In homes all over Scotland we will have our own Burns Supper Stuart and I included. The menu will be traditional.....
Haggis
Mashed Neep (Swede/Turnip)
Mashed Tatties. (Potatoes)
And of course a wee dram of Whisky
as a toast,
To the Haggis (The chieftan of the pudding race)
It is a lovely meal not to every bodies taste but it is good.
Stuart and I tried to go for a walk this morning but only managed to get to the news agent for a paper as the pavements we very slippy we had had a slight covering of snow then rain the whole lot had frozen over and left it all very icy. Stuart does not do slippy roads so we just had to come home. It's sunny now but think we are off the notion of a walk, you get settled down and then just can't be bothered. I think that's about it for today so till next time will leave you with some of the Bards words.......................
To A Mouse. By Robert Burns.
Wee, sleekit, cowran, tim'rous beastie,
O, what panic's in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty,
Wi' bickering brattle!
I wad be laith to rin an' chase thee,
Wi' murd'ring pattle!

Our walk ways are mostly ice covered during our winters. I rarely walk and miss getting some exercise from usually December to Mid March. I've never had Haggis and have wondered what it is.
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday.

Happy Burns Night to you and Stuart, I'm not a big Haggis fan, but will take the wee dram...lol.

There are times, I must confess, I sit in church and think of "To a Louse". It's a brilliant comment on our overinflated egos.
We tried Haggis while in Scotland; I suspect it was prepared especially for the tourists. I love tatties and turnip; we have is every US Thanksgiving.
Sounds like a wonderful celebration. Thanks for writing about it, I had no idea. (Hugs)Indigo
Have a good week coming up!
Sounds like a wonderful celebration! Sorry about your walk. I hope Spring will come early....
I'm sorry I'm late getting on here to wish you a Happy Burns Night, but I do hope you had a lovely time! We had pants weather here yesterday as well... ceptin ours was rain.
Hope you and Stuart had a good Burns Supper ~ the meal sounded great but I think I will pass on the Haggis ~ I tried it when we were in Scotland but did not like it at all :o) ~ Ally x
I never realized you celebrated Burns' birthday. Sounds like a great celebration. I always like Burns' work. What is Haggis? I'd probably like it because there's not much I don't like.
Take care with all that ice. xx

Joan, I very nearly made cranachan (sp?) for pudding yeterday, there was a recipe in the paper, but I didn't have enough cream!
I like haggis, in spite of having trouble with exploding ones in the past......
